NCLEX Exam Structure:

The NCLEX exam is a computerized adaptive test (CAT), which means the questions adjust to your performance level. The exam can range from 75 to 265 questions, with the first 60 questions being counted. The exam assesses knowledge, analysis, and application of nursing concepts.

Q: How many questions are there?
A: The NCLEX-RN exam has a minimum of 75 and a maximum of 265 questions. You will also be given 15 experimental questions that will not count for or against you.

Q: How much time do I have?
A: There is no time limit on any of the questions. The exam will take a maximum of 6 hours to complete, including a tutorial at the start. There are two optional breaks: one after 2 hours of testing and another after 3.5 hours of testing.

Q: When does the exam end?
A: Your exam will end when one of the following occurs:

  • You’ve answered the minimum number of questions (75).
  • You’ve demonstrated a lack of minimum competency by answering the minimum number of questions (75).
  • You’ve answered the maximum number of questions possible (265).
  • You’ve used up all of the time allotted to you (6 hours).

Q: What happens after the exam?
A: Your NCLEX exam results will be processed by your state’s nursing board. You can expect to receive your results within six weeks of taking the exam. If you pass, you will be eligible to apply for a nursing license in your state. If you fail, you will need to retake the exam.
